My l.e.a.n lifestyle story

Ken - The L.E.A.N MindBody Coach

My story in short - the straight facts

I was an overweight guy, with a big stomach who felt he looked older than he was. I was embarrassed by my weight and hated looking in the mirror. I was on my way to getting full blown diabetes and also could not sleep at night because my weight issue had made my sleep apnea worse. My energy levels were so low I would fall asleep in the day at the drop of a hat and even worse dose off at times when I was driving. When I started living a L.E.A.N Lifestyle everything changed for me, my weight dropped off and I lost over 50 lbs. I reversed my pre-diabetes, cured my sleep apnea. I am now leaner, I feel so much stronger and I often get told that I am looking younger. I am so grateful for what the L.E.A.N MindBody Method has done for me and my life. Now, I am now dedicated to helping people achieve the same results I did.

My L.e.A.N Lifestyle Journey

It can be tough to look in the mirror and feel disappointed and embarrassed by your body.

I know because I used to feel that way. Even though I had worked for years as a personal development trainer and motivational speaker, behind the public persona was an individual dealing with his own life challenges, particularly about weight and appearance.

I always found it hard to stick to my weight loss and healthy eating goals. Sometimes, even a small setback would be enough to derail my diet.

Over the years, I tried countless diet plans. While I scored some minor victories along the way, I could not follow these diets long-term because they made my food choices too restricted. As a result, I would lose focus and motivation and regain all the pounds lost.

Often, I knew what I was eating was bad for me, but I still ate it. Looking back, it feels as if I was punishing myself in some way. Then, at the age of 50, I had enough – enough of being tired and living in a body I hated. I was determined to finally turn my life around, lose the excess weight for good, and maintain a healthy body for life.

As part of that effort, I became a certified health coach and also obtained a qualification in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Both taught me a lot about the body and mind and helped me draw closer to my health and fitness goals. I was on the path to real change until, all of a sudden, I was left reeling by the most devastating event in my life – the passing of my beloved mother.

This loss sent me on a downward spiral, trapping me into mood swings and comfort eating. Not only did I regain the weight, but I also gained some on top of that. Food was my sole comfort. While I knew my health and body were going downhill, part of me did not care. I simply could not bear another restrictive, soul-sucking, low-calorie diet.

The moment of change came one day whilst I was out shopping. When I tried a new top in the changing room and I could not believe my eyes!

While I knew I had gained some weight, it was right there and then that I became utterly devastated and disgusted with my reflection in the mirror.

It was one of those moments that hit you so hard, slaps you in the face and wakes you up?

I knew I had to change, as my energy levels and overall health was declining, my moods were erratic and I was not in healthy state of mind. I was getting our of breath very easily. My weight gain and declining health was also affecting my relationship with my daughters.

If I allow myself to decline further, put on more weight and get sick through the process, I would not only failing myself I thought, I would be failing my children. If I don’t have the energy to have fun with them or the health to be able to support them, if and when they needed it; I would not be living as the kind of father I believed I should be. This became a big motivating factor for change for me.

I knew I had to change, so I committed to slimming down and becoming healthier.  I began an intense home workout programme, as I thought it had to be the best way for me to lose weight. While this helped a little, it failed to produce the change I was hoping for, and the exercise intensity was not sustainable for me.

Starting my intensive workout routine

I made this video and made it public when I started my intensive exercise routine to lose weight. I was serious about my efforts this time and wanted to be publicly held accountable.

Embracing a low carb diet and lifestyle

The real turning point in my life came when I stumbled upon the ketogenic diet. While I had heard about low carb dieting before, I had never tried it. “Cooking bacon, sausage, and eggs in butter for breakfast? That can not work,” I thought. “All it will do is clog my arteries and put me on the fast-track to the intensive care.”

Despite my initial reservations, the keto diet kept intriguing me. I did more research into the eating style, and the countless success stories of people following a keto diet convinced me to give it a go for 30 days.

The low carb diet was not restrictive

The first thing to strike me was that the diet was not as restrictive as the other diets I had followed. I enjoyed the broad range of foods I could eat, and I never felt hungry.

Despite my initial reservations, the keto diet kept intriguing me. I did more research into the eating style, and the countless success stories of people following a keto diet convinced me to give it a go for 30 days.

An amazing body transformation

Results from my weight loss also became apparent very quickly.  After two months, I was amazed at the transformation in my body, as were the people around me. I received compliment after compliment, and friends and family started to ask what had brought about such a change.

In six months, I lost three stone and nine pounds, going from a 37-inch to a 32-inch waist. None of my clothes fit anymore, so I had to replace my entire wardrobe.

reversed my pre-diabetes

Weight loss wasn’t my only benefit from the Keto diet. I also normalised my blood sugar levels and reversed my pre-diabetic state. (My doctor had previously warned me that unless I improved my blood glucose levels, I would end up a diabetic and on medication for life).

Hear how my change of diet and lifestyle reversed my pre-diabetic condition.

I cured my sleep apnea

I also no longer suffer from sleep apnea and have stopped sleeping with a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) breathing machine! This is great, as I now get a better nights sleep and do not feel so tired in the mornings or throughout the day.

Increased mental clarity

Another benefit for me was my mental clarity and my focus improved.  My overall health and general sense of well-being also improved and I lost all my cravings for sugar.

My daughters were proud of me

One of the highs of my keto journey was when my two girls told on how great their dad was looking. And how they had got their old, energetic and fun dad back. They told me how proud of me they were that I have made such a change, especially as I was now over 53 years old.

This picture was taken on my 54th birthday.

These results were so exciting

These results excited me so much that I decided to devote my life to helping others reach their weight,  health and fitness goals with the keto diet. Using the experience and lessons I had learned during my low carb journey, my knowledge and understanding of CBT, and my training as a health coach, I created the L.E.A.N MindBody Method – a programmatic, holistic weight-loss and health management method, you can use to maximise your weight loss, health and well-being in the most efficient manner.

The L.e.a.n mindbody method book

I have also been inspired to write a book to share the principles of LEAN Keto so that everyone can reap the life-enhancing benefits that I did. That book is called the L.E.A.N MindBody Method – The Science Of Getting Lean, Fit, and Healthy.

allow me to help you!

In a world with so many mxed and false messages, it is often hard to know who to trust and believe. I share my L.E.A.N Lifestyle journey not to impress you with the dramatic changes that have happened in my life – but to impress on you, that no matter what age, or how often you have tried before to lose weight and get healthier, it is possible to achieve with the L.E.A.N MindBody Method.

What exactly is L.E.A.N mindbody method, I hear you ask?

The L.E.A.N MindBody Method focuses on four fundamental areas that will assist you in nurturing and sustaining a holistically healthy ketogenic lifestyle and maximising its benefits. The L.E.A.N MindBody Method focuses on helping you to develop sustainable, healthy lifestyle habits. The word ‘L.E.A.N’ is an acronym that stands for Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude, and Nutrition.

L is for Lifestyle - A focus on Sleep & Sleep Habits

The lifestyle element of L.E.A.N focuses on developing daily habits that assist in developing a L.E.A.N Lifestyle. It also has a particular focus on developing better sleep habits. Sleep deprivation is the root cause of many of the ill health problems that we face today such as weight gain, diabetes and stroke. The L.E.A.N MindBody Method can assist you in developing better sleep habits which will enhance other areas of your life.

E is for Exercise - A focus on Exercise & Fitness

Developing the right attitude and mindset is a fundamental part of succeeding in developing a L.E.A.N Lifestyle or any lifestyle change. I would go as far as saying that before you can change your diet, you have to change your attitude and mindset. Your attitude and mindset have a tremendous effect on what you do and how you do it. The L.E.A.N MindBody Method is a fusion of cognitive psychology, behavioural therapy, personal development, and health and well-being strategies, that work directly to influence the cognitive processes, that influence your behaviour, attitude and mindset.

A is for Attitude - A focus on Attitude & Motivation

Although exercise is not needed to lose weight on a low carb  diet, exercise is still a fundamental part of being holistically healthy. Exercise is a miracle cure we have always had, but some have neglected to take their recommended dose! The right type of exercising as you live a L.E.A.N Lifestyle will compound its benefits. Research shows that physical activity can boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing the risk of stress and depression.

N is for Nutrition - A focus on Low Carb Nutrition

Low carb nutrition is the foundation of the L.E.A.N MindBody Method. Balanced  nutrition is the key to optimal health. It can provide many other benefits besides weight loss. The kind of food you eat affects the way you feel and how your body functions. The benefits of a low carb diet are many. Besides weight management and diabetes reversal, good nutrition is essential for the body and all its systems to function optimally for a lifetime.

When you join the L.E.A.N Lifestyle family, you will begin a journey to not just do but live a lifestyle that your future self and family will thank you for.

My passion is to assist you in not only starting that journey but keeping it going. Of all the habits you can adopt in your life one of the best ones is to ‘Make Health Your Habit’. A L.E.A.N Lifestyle habit that will help you to live longer, feel stronger and look younger.
